23. Word: figurative language
Definition: words that are symbolic, not literal, and mean more than what they say
Example: similes, metaphors, imagery, onomatopoeia, hyperbole

24. Word: imagery
Definition: the impression the audience receives when the poet uses figures of speech that paint a picture in your head
Example:

Definition: a comparison of two unlike things, using LIKE or AS
Example: I was hungry as a horse.

Definition: a comparison of two unlike things
Example: I was a pig when I ate.

27. Word: alliteration
Definition: the repetition of the beginning letter in several nearby
words
Example: lovely lonely lights

28. Word: onomatopoeia
Definition: words that imitate the sounds they make
Example: Woof, meow, oink

29. Word: hyperbole
Definition: to enlarge or increase, exaggerate, something beyond normal.
Example: It took us all day to walk to school.

30. Word: personification
Definition: giving human characteristics to a non-human thing.
Example: The ocean crashed angrily during the storm.

31. Word: free verse poetry
Definition: poetry with no rhyme or rhythm, length of lines varies

32. Word: rhyme
Definition: the repetition of word ending sounds at the end of each line or every other line of a poem

33. Word: line
Definition: a sentence in poetry, may not have a period at the end

34. Word: couplet
Definition: 2 lines that are not separated and rhyme with each other

35. Word: stanza
Definition: a paragraph in poetry, related lines are grouped together and separated from another by a space on the page
Examples: couplet (2), haiku (3), quatrain (4), cinquain/limerick (5), sonnet (14)
